I fell further in love with my little netbook when on a whim I broke out Quake II and Driver. The joy of long late nights playing Q2 with my boys over a LAN game suddenly rushed over me. It was epic. Amazing to see that such a small machine just cranked out the video and 3d rendering that Q2 required. Such a perfect example of Moore’s law in effect. The machine I used to play Q2 on needed its own video card and lots of RAM and a great screen. Now all the same requirements can be met by a device that is a little bit bigger than a hardbound book. The same could be said for Driver. I used to have lag and get frustrated cause my computer couldn’t keep up with my speed. Now this little netbook puts me to shame because I am having to keep up. As they continue to cram more and more processing power on such tiny chips I am awaiting the day when I can rock Crysis at full res on a netbook. It’s not too far away.

Ok so now we have the XBOX 360 and the PS3 setting the bench mark for next gen consoles (some say Wii but with no HD I don’t count it). Either way as we continue to see developments for the next gen consoles the question is where will the next dramatic step be? Well aside from more photo realistic graphics and greater true physics reproduction and advancements in software, I think there might be some advancements in hardware. The new in-controllers are the motion sensing style like Wii Nunchuk and the PS3 DualShock3. We also have the BluRay disc which offers up to 50gb of memory for game developers to romp. The expanding storage capability of these optical discs are allowing developers to create more expansive environments for the gamer. The one issue that I have always had with optical disc games… Loading time. The disc needs to spin up to get the stage’s landscape loaded into memory. Well I have something to suggest. We return to cartridge based games.

Cartridge games sound archaic but bare with me. Solid State Disk (SSD) drives are getting larger and less expensive as time progresses and they provide INSANE data transfer rates. Picture a massive environment that has no “save points” and no loading time between areas. If game developers build on this it will also minimize the chances for piracy due to the difficulty of the hardware.
